If you like the cake below, hop over and see my latest "Christmas" cake... it's a Holly Jolly Birthday {Christmas} Cake!!
So, you might have noticed my absence for most of yesterday afternoon/evening and today. That's because I've been working on cakes! After being without an oven for more than 3 weeks, I was super excited to get back into baking mode. My first cake in my new oven was this Christmas Tree Cake.
Since it was for my husband's lab, I got to do whatever I wanted. He is a calibration technician, and his initial and only request was that it be cal-lab related. I don't really know how to make a calibration related, manly, Christmas cake.
My actual response was, "Um...honey, as a cake?". I said, "How about a snowman?", (thinking...it's a man, so that ought to be manly). He said, "How about a snowman calibrating a micrometer?" I rolled my eyes... and yeah, that didn't happen.
But what I ended up with was {I think} a very gender neutral, bright happy, very Christmasy cake.
It's completely covered in homemade Marshmallow Fondant - including the gifts and "leaves" on the tree. I actually just cut stars out of rolled out fondant and layered them from the bottom up! Oh, and those tiny bows are not easy to make {and therefore, obviously not perfect}.
For the star on top, I made two duplicate stars and "glued" them together with water, with a tiny piece of floral wire running through the middle so I could stand it up on top of the tree.
And on the inside....
Well, it had to be pretty and Christmas-y too! It's all vanilla (wedding) cake, layed and covered with Cream Cheese Buttercream. I sort of played off the Rainbow cake idea, but went with only red & green. The tree was all cake on the inside too (although by the time I got this picture, it was starting to smoosh down pretty bad)!
So, that's that. Then today, I started on my next cake. It's not nearly photo worthy, but I did get an important element made... here's a hint of the theme of my next cake...
It's my very first train..made of fondant! Hopefully, I'll be posting pics of this completed cake sometime late Friday night or Saturday morning!
